High-performance Carbon Fiber Composite Materials in The Rocket Structure Application

Significant reduction of launch costs is one of the main goals of the development of the aerospace industry at both domestic and abroad.

Many aerospace industry organizations are pursuing the lightweight of the rocket structure. In such kind of atmosphere, carbon fiber composite materials have become the first choice for lightweight.

 

At present, the main structures of rocket flying retarders such as wings, nasal cone, and fuselage can be used by using carbon fiber composite materials (CFRP), which can effectively reduce weight. Especially for the structure of the wing cylinder, the rigidity is the primary requirement, and the CFRP has high ratio and high rigidity. After rough estimation, the weight of carbon fiber tail wings is about 2 pounds, while the weight of metal aluminum is about 5 pounds, and carbon fiber has a higher safety factor.

 

CFRP materials are made of carbon fiber/polyether ethery ketone (PEEK) material. Compared with metal aluminum, it has high mechanical and thermal performance and high ratio and stiffness, which eventually reduces weight by around 40%.
